PERCHERON
This
well known draught breed originated in the Paris basin
area of La Perche - its ancestors were Arabs brought
to Europe by the Moors. Its strength and courage made
it the perfect mount for heavily armoured knights in
battle.
It is an outstanding farm worker and many Percherons
were exported all over the world. Although massive,
it is a quality horse with long, low action.
Origin: France.
Colour: Usually grey, or black.
Height: 15.2 - 17 hands.
Conformation: Broad, square forehead,
fine ears and prominent eyes, long arched neck with
full mane (and tail), powerful chest and hindquarters,
clean sound limbs and good feet.
Character: Intelligent, good natured.
Uses: Principally draught, but may be
crossed with thoroughbred to produce a quality heavyweight
hunter.
