Baileys Lo-Cal balancer is a nutrient dense pellet containing quality protein, vitamins and minerals, plus Yea-Sacc yeast culture but very little carbohydrate. Pretty similar, on the face of it, to other balancers but, as its Baileys, the quality of the ingredients and formulation more than stack up.
Improved Formulation
Reformulated since its launch in 1998 Baileys Lo-Cal balancer now contains improved levels of the chelated trace minerals copper and zinc plus selenium, which is present as Sel-Plex 1026 organic selenium for improved bioavailability, as well as the anti-oxidant vitamin E. Yea-Sacc yeast culture helps promote healthy gut function by stimulating fibre digesting bacteria and quality protein provides essential amino acids required to build and repair muscle and other tissues. In short Baileys Lo-Cal balancer provides the adult horse or pony with all the essential nutrients for health and well-being but without significant carbohydrate levels.
The Science Bit!
Protein is made up of amino acids which are required to build and repair muscle and other tissues. Some amino acids, such as lysine and methionine, need to be supplied in the diet every day and are termed "essential". The better the quality of protein in a feed, the more essential amino acids it supplies.
Minerals are needed both as structural elements of the body and as components of enzymes involved in normal metabolic processes (chemical reactions). Trace minerals are those that are needed in relatively small amounts but which are still very important for maintaining good health and performance. Certain trace minerals, including copper, manganese and zinc can be chelated by attaching them to another molecule, such as a protein or sugar. These bioplexes are more readily available for absorption by the horse than inorganic mineral sources.
Vitamins are also required to promote and regulate metabolic processes. Lo-Cal balancer provides optimum levels of vitamins including, A, D, E and biotin.
FEEDING ADVICE
Lo-Cal can be fed as the sole concentrate, to balance forage, or alongside reduced levels of other compound feeds to top up nutrient levels.
Good Doers - Often on restricted grazing through the summer and little or no hard feed, good doers are frequently lack lustre as a result. Formulated to be fed in small quantities, Baileys Lo-Cal balancer will provide essential nutrients that may be lacking through this regime, making sure the horse or pony doesn't miss out and often helping them feel brighter too, but without the calories that they don't need.
Laminitis - Its low starch level (at around 10%) and small feeding quantities make Baileys Lo-Cal balancer an excellent option for the horse or pony prone to laminitis. Biotin, methionine, calcium and zinc are also included to promote hoof growth and repair. Customers are advised to contact Baileys Nutritionists to discuss diets for laminitics.
Working and Performance Horses - The concentrated levels of nutrients in Lo-Cal create superb top line, muscle tone and overall condition whilst its low starch (energy) levels mean it is suitable for over exuberant horses. Those who maintain condition well may find that Lo-Cal as the sole concentrate, plus ad lib forage (grass, hay or haylage), is all they need to support them through the competition season. For those who require a little more energy to keep them looking and feeling on top form, Lo-Cal balancer can be fed to "top dress" reduced quantities of other compound feeds and can also top up nutrient levels if the hard feed used is formulated for a lower level of work than the horse is actually doing. A combination of Baileys Lo-Cal balancer plus Baileys Ultimate Finish high oil supplement provides a low starch diet for the performance horse - contact a Baileys nutritionist if you've been advised to feed your horse a low starch diet.
Showing - The quality protein and concentrated nutrients in Lo-Cal balancer create top line and excellent overall condition.
Weight Gain - Whilst adding Lo-Cal balancer to an existing ration will improve the overall nutrient content and should improve digestive efficiency due to its yeast culture, it is likely to be more effective (and cost effective) to alter the base ration to one formulated for weight gain ie. Baileys No.4 Top Line Conditioning Cubes or No.17 Top Line Conditioning Mix.
Box Rest - Cutting hard feed out altogether is not the best option for a horse recovering from illness or injury. Lo-Cal balancer provides a balance of essential nutrients plus quality protein for tissue repair but its negligible carbohydrate content helps avoid temperament problems or digestive upsets.
Breeding Stock - Due to their increased nutritional demands, we recommend Buckeye Gro'N Win stud balancer for stallions, broodmares and youngstock.
Lo-Cal can be fed on its own to balance forage, or in addition to an existing concentrate ration.
Horses on box rest may benefit from the addition of an alfalfa chaff.
Ensure that adequate forage (grass/hay) is available.
When in work and feeding Lo-Cal as the sole concentrate ration, increase the daily quantity by 1 /2lb per day whatever size of the horse or pony.
*Lo-Cal is NOT RECOMMENDED for broodmares and growing youngstock. Use Buckeye Gro'n Win to meet their increased nutritional requirements.
