Horse Worming de-mystified

Are you confused as to which horse wormer to administer and at what times of the year? Do you understand the complicated worming jargon?

To help de-mystify worming and simplify parasite control, animal health company, Intervet UK, has launched the Active3 worming plan, the comprehensive answer to worming which will help look after the long-term health of horses.

The easy-to-use programme features Intervet’s trusted wormers – Panacur® (which contains fenbendazole as its active ingredient), Pyratape P® (which contains pyrantel as its active ingredient) and Vectin® horse paste (which contains ivermectin as its active ingredient).

By using a combination of Intervet’s three different worming products, Active3 is effective against all major infective parasitic worms and larvae including small redworm, large redworm, pinworm, tapeworm, roundworm and bots. The plan provides a straightforward month-by-month guide to which wormers to use during the winter and which wormer to use on an annual rotation every three years during the summer grazing season (ie Panacur every six to eight weeks in year one, Pyratape P every four to six weeks in year two and Vectin every eight to 10 weeks in year three).

Before joining the worming regime, new horses to the programme should be dosed with a five-day course of Panacur Equine Guard and a double dose of Pyratape P on the sixth day.

Containing active ingredients from different chemical groups, the wormers featured in the plan will help delay resistance to worming products and prevent genetic immunity being passed on to future generations of worms.

“Horse owners are very confused about which worming products to administer and at what times of the year”, says Tim Zoch, equine product manager at Intervet. “The Active3 worming plan is a straightforward and reliable system which features three proven, trusted and effective wormers which will remove the confusion from horse worming for good.”

Intervet has produced a range of informative brochures and a helpful worming chart to support the launch of the worming plan and help de-mystify worming.
