The first signs of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) are often mistaken by horse owners as a ‘bit of a sniffle’. However, EHV is a potentially fatal disease that can cause severe loss of form and associated problems including abortion and even paralysis.

Online information on how to strangle strangles!

Do you know the symptoms of strangles and what to do if an outbreak occurs on your yard? If the answer is no, then look no further than the informative new strangles website - www.equine-strangles.co.uk - which provides horse owners with clear and concise details on this highly contagious and seriously debilitating disease.

The invaluable site provides horse owners with a full low down on the disease including its symptoms, diagnosis, transmission, treatment and complications, together with stable management procedures and outbreak control.

In addition, the website features a useful news section, which will report on any recent strangles outbreaks, together with information on vaccination with Equilis StrepE®, which is manufactured by Intervet UK, to help prevent this devastating disease.

“Strangles is feared because it can cause major problems to the equine industry due to its prolonged course, recovery period and associated complications, which can sometimes be fatal,” says Tim Zoch, product manager at Intervet. “By launching the new website, which is easy to access and simple to follow, we are providing horse owners with information on the prevention, treatment and management of strangles.

The site will be a useful reference tool for horse owners wishing to gain further details on the disease at the touch of a button.”

According to International Collating Centre reports, strangles is responsible for 30% of infectious bacterial disease episodes in horses and, in Sweden, where strangles and equine ‘flu are notifiable diseases, there are approximately four cases of strangles for every case of ‘flu.

Equilis StrepE reduces the clinical signs of strangles and the occurrence of lymph node abscesses in horses that are at risk of Streptococcus equi infection such as competition horses, horses in livery yards, horses at sales and horses in an outbreak area.

For further information about strangles, Equilis StrepE or the new strangles website - www.equine-strangles.co.uk - please contact Intervet’s Veterinary Support Group on 01908 685685.
